More information about TriAmpable Toshiba speaker system SS 51,
I would like to know more about this model, like If it was ever on the market! Toshiba in Japan do not know.
However they were able to tell me that these speakers were made in 1972 and sent me an A4 copy of the microfilm from there database, They could not tell me if they were ever offered for sale in retail stores or how many sets were made. If anyone has any more info on these TriAmpable speakers could you please Email me..
Below are scans of the information I recieved from Toshiba and some photos of the speakers inside and out. Click on the thumbnails to view pictures in hi res.
They are 4 way complete closed type and contain a 15 inch free edge high compliance woofer,
a 10 X 3 inch horn type squawker,
a 2.5 inch horn type tweeter and
a 1 and a quarter inch horn type super tweeter.
frequency range 20 - 40,000 Hz
Output sound pressure level: 100.5 dB/W/50cm (19.5")
Update: Did Onkyo ever label any of there speakers as Toshiba or visa versa?
After a long time searching for information on my Toshiba ss-51 speakers with very few results, I am now nearly convinced that my Toshiba ss-51 speakers are actually re-labeled Onkyo e-154a, Although I still need some conformation of this.
After getting a reply email back from a helpful person at Toshiba in Japan in 2001 saying That the only information they could find was on a piece of microfiche film dated 1972, which they had printed out and were posting me via "snail mail".
The information contained on the microfiche film was detailed service data for the ss-51 and ss-41. A copy can be found below.
Recently I stumbled on http://www.audio-heritage.jp which is a great resource on vintage speakers, I could not find anything there on any Toshiba speakers at all, but when I was looking through there old Onkyo range of speakers, I found a few models that had the same form factor as my Toshiba's.
Then I found a set that had an image with a cross section showing the insides of the speaker (maybe the same as ss-41) (http://www.audio-heritage.jp/ONKYO/speaker/e-83amkiii.html).Because of the uncanny similarity, I started looking into these Onkyo speakers even more.
After I translated the page in google, and converted mm,cm, to inches and kg to lbs, I found that the Onkyo e-154a, produced in 1968 had exactly the same dimensions and statistics as the Toshiba ss-51.
To much similarity to be dismissed?
Unfortunately there is very little information I can find on the net about the e-154a, I will send an email to Onkyo to see if they can confirm my suspicions, but any additional information anyone can supply me will be great.
